She traveled by train to Solvang, California to a folk school in the Winter of 1912. She also attended Grand View College. While in Des Moines, she worked in a private home. In Viborg, she worked in a grocery store. After marrying Harl, she was a full-time homemaker. She was a good cook, and baked lots of "goodies".
Marie was a busy homemaker with 3 children. Harl's brother, Earl, lived with the family for many years. They always had hired men and hired girls to help with the farmwork and housework. Marie was a very mild-mannered person and very dedicated to her family. She had a sense of humor. She died of a heart problem at the age of 89.
